Greater China’s leading IP Network Service Provider is one of Taiwan’s very few to have maintained normal operations throughout the 3-day odyssey
(Hong Kong, 26 September 2001) Greater China¡¦s leading IP Network Service Provider Diyixian.com Limited revealed that its Internet data center business across Taiwan remained relatively unscathed after Typhoon Nari, dubbed as Taiwan¡¦s most devastating typhoon for decades, swept through the island last week, causing unprecedented disruption to transport and communications throughout the northern territories.
As the killer typhoon triggered the island¡¦s worst-ever floods in a century, fierce torrents of rain turned many Taipei streets into rivers of rising water, stalling traffic, stranding automobiles, flooding basements and plunging the whole city into chaos. Four months after being damaged by a massive fire, Taiwan¡¦s Eastern Science Park, a 26-story-high complex in the eastern Taipei suburb of Hsichih that hosts many of the island¡¦s leading IT companies, suffered once again as Nari caused widespread flooding and power outages throughout the 3 high-rise towers.
Most Internet Service Providers (ISP) in Taipei and the surrounding areas of Taan, Neihu, Hsichih and Nankang were paralyzed to different degrees by flash floods, power blackouts and the resulting financial losses.
One exception is Diyixian. Diyixian¡¦s world-class Internet centre at Taipei was relatively unscathed by the flooding and other miseries. The miracle here is not in the act of fortune, but rather that Diyixian makes hazard mitigation and relief against the risk of catastrophic natural disasters feel quite like part of day-to-day practice. Combining the strength of one of Taiwan¡¦s best-designed data center infrastructures with the sophistication of a full range of disaster recovery facilities, this ¡§risk-conscious¡¨ data center in downtown Taipei ensures fast resumption of services after a network or electricity failure.
Diyixian¡¦s proprietary power backup system is also a key success factor here. Many network managers consider failure of electricity supply a real danger to data centers because of its potential impact on bottom lines and worker safety. Accordingly, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems have been deployed in all of Diyixian¡¦s Internet centers across the island to ensure business continuity and to mitigate the risk of system downtime. This, together with its dedicated team of engineers providing 24 x 7 monitoring of network security, offers businesses the infrastructure needed to protect their mission critical communication and data networks from natural or human disasters.
For this reason, during the sporadic power outages throughout Taipei last week following heavy downpours and flooding, Diyixian was able to maintain a normal electricity supply despite sudden blackouts at the building, and even had a surplus of electricity that it later shared with the Next Magazine office in the same building. ¡§Without the generous support of Diyixian, we would have halted or delayed the publishing of our magazine. This highlights the value of effectively planned and well-rehearsed emergency and contingency procedures, and the importance of a comprehensive, cross-party approach to the control and resolution of high-risk events,” said Peir Woei, Next Magazine’s Editor-In Chief.
His view was echoed by Lap Man, Diyixian’s CEO, who noted, ¡§Both typhoon Nari and the fire that hit the Eastern Science Park in Hsichih show that the importance of end-to-end Managed Network Services could not be overestimated. For all the advanced facilities within a data center, network engineers have to exercise caution and judgment when acting upon the extremities of disaster. Diyixian has done a good job, and played an irreplaceable role here.”
